Happy St. Valentine's Day

What a day to have the day after Ash Wednesday!  We don't normally whoop it up on this day, but it usually is a good excuse to have a nice chocolatey dessert.  No dessert today, but fortunately my dh and I were able to celebrate in a grand way this past Saturday.

The two of us and 22 of our closest friends were invited to a dinner prepared and hosted by 18 of our collective daughters.

A friend of mine leads a group every year for girls aged 10 thru 18 where she teaches about a specific country - its culture, history, famous people, saints, etc.  This year they are learning about France and so she decided to treat all the parents to a seven course French dinner.

The girls arrived earlier in the day and prepared the following menu (some items had been started earlier in the week!):

Champagne Punch with Hors d’oeurves – 1)  Salmon Mousse served on crackers, 2) Olive Tapenade served on crackers
French Onion Soup with Toasted French Bread topped with Swiss Cheese
Salad with Vinaigrette
Boeuf Bourguignon – cubes of beef sautéed with onions, and then slow-roasted with carrots and mushrooms
Chicken Chasseur – chicken breasts, sautéed with green onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, and herbs
Triple Rice Pilaf – Wild rice, white rice, brown rice
Fruit and cheese course – fruit trays with multiple sliced fruits, and Cheeses – Camembert, Brie, and another cheese I cannot remember
Dessert Crepes – spread with either Chocolate Nutella or French Banana Filling

My friend is also a woman after my own heart as she is incredibly organized.  Check out this chart she made so that everyone knew what their jobs were and to ensure that all things got done when they needed to!

Not only did they cook the meal, but we were greeted by them and then served hors d'oeuvres and champagne punch.  During the meal there was also various forms of entertainment.  Some sang, others played instruments and did some miming, which the French are famous for.

The evening was absolutely wonderful!  The company was great and the food was scrumptious.  By the time we left, the girls were exhausted and my friend will probably sleep for a week.  What a blessing she is to have given so much of her time for her friends and their girls!

God Bless!

A Blessed Thanksgiving!

As we approach Thanksgiving and think about all that we are thankful for, I thought I would share with you some of my favorite bible verses that I found while doing my scripture study on the word "thanks".

O give thanks to the Lord for He is good; for His mercy endures forever!...Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress; He led them by a straight way, till they reached a city to dwell in.  Let them thank the Lord for His merciful love, for His wonderful works to the son of men!  For He satisfies him who is thirsty and the hungry He fills with good things"  PS 107:1, 6-9

O give thanks to the Lord, call on His name, make known His deeds among the peoples.  1 Chr 16:8

 And my all-time favorite:

Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.  1 Thes 5:16-18
May God bless you all this Thanksgiving and may you have a great day with family and friends.  Thank you for stopping by here and sharing my journey with me!

God Bless!

Happy 4th of July

God Bless America!

Almighty God, bless our nation and make it true to the ideas of freedom and justice and brotherhood for all who make it great. Guard us from war, from fire and wind, from compromise, fear, confusion. Be close to our president and our statesmen; give them vision and courage, as they ponder decisions affecting peace and the future of the world. Make me more deeply aware of my heritage; realizing not only my rights but also my duties and responsibilities as a citizen. Make this great land and all its people know clearly Your will, that they may fulfill the destiny ordained for us in the salvation of the nations, and the restoring of all things in Christ. Amen

Prayer found at this website!

Happy Feast of St. Nicholas!

What a wonderful feast day to have during Advent; a mini-anticipation of Christmas Day!  We haven't always celebrated this feast; it came along later as our family grew and we looked for more ways to celebrate our faith.

We do the usual "put your shoes out" routine.  Sometimes we put them next to the beds, sometimes in the hallway outside the bedroom doors.  This year we lined them up by the fireplace.

St. Nicholas comes and fills the shoes with candy.  I know many families who fill them with healthy things to eat, but here, it is candy.  Not any candy, mind you, but candy that was frozen at Halloween and taken out special for this feast day!

St. Nicholas also usually brings us a movie.  It either tends to be the new Narnia movie or the new Pirates movie.  As you can probably guess, this year it is Pirates 4 for all of us to enjoy.

One thing that has been added over the last few years are the little treats and notes that are put into the shoes by some of the kids.  This year one of the kids put a penny in each shoe, while two others wrote little notes from St. Nicholas for each of their siblings.  That, to me, shows what this feast day is all about...thinking of others and doing something nice for them.

In the spirit of good ole St. Nick, have a very blessed feast day!

Happy All Souls Day!

November is truly one of my most favorite liturgical months.  I love the Holy Souls and I love the idea of having an entire month dedicated to praying for them.  Usually we take the names of family and friends who have died, including the most recent ones first and then choosing others to fill up the entire month.  Every day we pray for the soul of a different person.

I would usually just print out a calendar page for the month and write people's names on each day, but this year I think we'll "spice" it up a bit and just write out names on pieces of paper and pick one from a container every day.  I'm trying to come up with an idea for a container that would represent a soul but so far I haven't had much luck :)  Any ideas would be appreciated!

Especially during this month don't forget the prayer of St. Gertrude.  Our Lord dictated the following prayer to her to release 1,000 Souls from Purgatory each time it is said.

"Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen."
Have a holy day!

Happy Halloween!

I had dreams this month of taking my youngest children to the pumpkin farm where I would always take my older children.  Well, time went by, the beautiful weather passed and we were left with yesterday...and then it rained the entire day.

"Today," I thought.  "Today is beautiful and sunny.  Today we will go on a field trip to the pumpkin farm and buy our pumpkins for Halloween!"  Until I looked at the pumpkin farm's website and found out that their season ended yesterday.

Oh well, maybe next year!  We did, however, manage to find a smaller pumpkin farm that was still open so we were able to buy and paint our pumpkins before Halloween is over!

May you have a very blessed Fourth of July!  Pray for our country.  Consider praying the Patriotic Rosary.  It really is a beautiful way to pray for this nation.

Happy St. Valentine's Day!

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

Pray, Hope and Don't Worry!

and have yourselves a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Do not look forward to the trials and crosses
of this life with dread and fear.
Rather, look to them with full confidence
that as they arise, God, to whom you belong,
will deliver you from them.
He has guided and guarded you
thus far in life.
Do you but hold fast to his dear hand, and
He will lead you safely through all trials.
Whenever you cannot stand,
he will carry you lovingly in his arms.
Do not look forward to what may happen tomorrow.
The same Eternal Father who cares for you today
will take good care of you tomorrow
and every day of your life.
Either he will shield you from suffering or
He will give you the unfailing strength to bear it.
Be at peace then and put aside all useless thoughts,
vain dreads, and anxious imaginations.

( St. Francis de Sales)

A Memorial Day Prayer

Dear Lord, on this day we remember those who have served us by protecting our freedoms. When we celebrate our long weekend withour friends and family, help us remember that our freedom to speak of You, our freedom to worship You and our freedom to do that which we ought to do, have all been bought at the price and sacrifice of many lives.

Your Son died for our eternal life in heaven. So too, Your children died protecting us here on earth. Help us to be mindful this weekend and always of the sacrifices made by those in uniform for all our freedoms.
Amen.

Odds and Ends

Happy All Hallows Eve! I will be out trick or treating with a few pirates and some prairie girls. Hope those of you who trick or treat have an enjoyable afternoon. This year it appears as if the weather is going to cooperate: sunny and mid 60s!

The organizing freak inside of me has to share this great idea I found on heblogssheblogs. It is a great way to organize and keep track of all of the things you have to do. Instead of keeping a bunch of to-do lists, the author said she started writing things she needed to do on the back of old business cards she had. Every morning she looks through the stack of cards and picks out a few that she can accomplish that day. Once done, she throws them out. Too bad I don't have any old business cards lying around...

Tomorrow begins November (already?). One thing we've done in the past years is to take a blank calendar page for the month and write the name of a deceased friend or family on each day of the month. I hang the calendar in the kitchen and each day we pray for and offer up sacrifices for that person. It is a neat way to remember the special people in your life who are no longer with you. It is also fun to tell the little kids about these people that they never met.

God Bless!
